Selectionbox instead of zoom-box

The zoombox (dragging the mouse with left button down) is a great feature!
But I would like to be able to alternate between zooming and selecting with the box (depending on some checkbox somewhere).
So, if in zoom mode, the zoom should work as usual but in 'select' mode, I would like the box (or any box) to be drawn, but instead of zooming the area, I would like to select the lines inside the box.
I guess I'm not the first one asking about this, but I have searched without findning an answer to my question. And I can't find anything about it in the tutorial/feature demo either.
So, what would be 'best practice' to acieve this?
